Who We Are
Buffalo Films, founded by BAFTA winning Casting Director Des Hamilton and Producer Tilly Standing, is a production company that celebrates, supports and enables women - regardless of experience - to make their first feature film. There are proportionately fewer women represented in film today than there were in 1913.
- Currently there are 2 men for every 1 woman across film, television and theatre.
- In 2019, of the top 100 grossing films, 12% were directed by women, 20% were written by women.
- Kathryn Bigelow is the only woman ever to win an Academy Award for Best Director, only five women have ever been nominated.
When women account for 51% of moviegoers we believe there must be more female voices involved in the process of making the content. Our mission is to change the cultural landscape and even out the playing field. Des Hamilton is renown within the industry for taking risks when it comes to casting, often combining professional talent with those who have had no previous acting experience whatsoever, including BAFTA winning actor Kathleen McDermott (Mover Callar), Thomas Turgoose (This is England) and Tom Sweet (The Childhood of a Leader). We believe this philosophy be applied to other areas of the industry, and in particular, should focus on the underrepresented voices belonging to women. We aim to achieve this by creating a space where stories - told by new talent - will be supported and developed with the guidance from more established collaborators. Our plan is to create low budget, high quality debut features - five women, five films. In doing this we hope to create mobility and parity in an industry, which to many, can seem impenetrable.
In Development
We are currently developing five feature length films by female writer/directors.
